Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion at QAGOMA

My love of Japan and especially Japanese fashion is well documented on this blog, but just how well known it was outside the realm of my little internet bubble I wasn't really sure. So when the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art #QAGOMA contacted me to invite me to the their exhibition celebrating 30 years of Japanese fashion as a guest of the gallery because they were aware of my love for Japan and Japanese fashion I was in total shock. This was the most perfect and exciting invitation to ever grace my inbox in over eight years of blogging. Being recognised as someone who has obsessively followed, blogged and documented Japanese fashion for all these years was an amazing feeling. The exhibition, Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion, opened to the media on October 31st and I was there for both the media preview and opening night celebrations. Walking through the exhibition during the media preview I got so overwhelmed by everything that I saw and I started to tear up, I just couldn't believe I was seeing all these wonderful pieces in person. The exhibition covers four distinct themes that embody Japanese fashion - 'In praise of shadows', 'Flatness', 'Tradition and Innovation' and 'Cool Japan'.

'In praise of shadows'
Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons - Autumn/Winter 2009-10

This first section explores the use of black, texture and light. When the names we take for granted now such as Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto first debuted in Paris in the early 1980s they caused such a stir within the fashion world the phenomenon was sensationalised as 'Japan Shock'. Essentially the designs rejected the body conscious silhouette of the time creating formless, shapeless and often colourless pieces that aimed to conceal rather than expose the body. This same emphasis on black and deconstructured shapes continues to inspire and influence the new generation of designers in Japan.

Yohji Yamamoto - Spring/Summer 1998-99 (white) | Yohji Yamamoto - Spring/Summer 2003 (first black dress)

'Flatness'
Comme des Garçons (Rei Kawakubo) - Autumn/Winter 2012-13

Flatness looks at the pieces inspired by the traditional dress of Japan, the kimono and also origami and Japanese art and graphic design. An interesting and uniquely Japanese concept behind some of the pieces is that of  'ma' which is formed by the empty space when wearing a kimono.

 Ohya (Hiroaki Ohya) - Spring/Summer 2000

'Tradition and Innovation'
Japanese designers are known for their groundbreaking construction techniques. Designers such as Issey Miyake collaborated closely with textile designers to develop his own unique fabrics. This section of the exhibition explores the relationships between the traditional and innovative and the ways Japanese designers continue to play with convention by deconstructing both traditional Japanese dress and western clothing.

 Yohji Yamamoto - Spring/Summer 1995

Comme des Garçons (Rei Kawakubo) - Spring/Summer 2007

Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons - Autumn/Winter 2000-01

Koji Tatsuno - Autumn/Winter 1993-94

'Cool Japan'
Cool Japan explores the vibrant youth subcultures that have become synonymous with the streets of Harajuku. From Gothic Lolita to the Decora style of the mid-late 1990's (which is currently having a resurgence in popularity in Harajuku itself thanks to Tumblr) this section was by far one of my favourites. Harajuku trends work at a frantic pace and there is always something new coming from the scene. Unfortunately in Harajuku some of the more well known subcultural phenomenons such as the goth loli style are all but dead as compared to ten or even five years ago you just don't see them as often. That being said decora is definitely on the way back as I noticed on my last visit so nothing ever completely dies, no matter how much my friends who lived through it the first time wish it could. One of my closest friends in Japan is actually in the very first FRUiTS book in her full 1990s decora style, she wasn't even aware it was in a book until she saw it on a trip to the USA and she was so embarrassed because even at that stage it was a good six years later and her style had evolved (she was one of the Spank! girls) so decora was well and truly over by then (2006 or so). Most people have an idea of Harajuku that is very heavily influenced by that book not realising that those photos are now at least fourteen years old and those people are now mothers, fathers and maybe even salarymen! Harajuku is of course still a vibrant place but a lot of the tribes are dwindling - this is a topic my friends who are the designers, street style stars and shop owners that make Harajuku what it is and I always end up discussing until the wee hours of the morning when I'm over there. Many blame it on the sudden influx of western chain stores such as H&M and Forever 21 which is interesting as the very same thing is now happening here with casualties in Australian independent retail already occurring (RIP Alice Euphemia). Anyway I could rant all day about the changing face of Harajuku fashion, it's obviously my passion (lol)

 Baby The Stars Shine Bright

 Comme des Garçons

 Ne Net - Autumn/Winter 2009-10

Oh how I love Ne Net! This collection is from around their peak period design wise, I find a lot of their recent collections far more watered down and commercial but I will never stop loving them. Their runway show back in 2007 was one of my first ever fashion shows and I will never ever forget how amazing it was.

QAGOMA Brisbane

There is a great program of events such as the Future Beauty Uplate series featuring talks, live music, Japanese food and bars. Also Future Fashion Sundays featuring talks, workshops, special events and much more. Check out the full program to plan your trip!

#QAGOMA had arranged for some very fabulous Harajuku girls to be at both the media preview and opening night celebrations. Super kawaii!

What I wore to the media preview. I was having such a difficult time trying to find something amazing to wear for both the media preview and opening night. I really wanted something that would stand out from the crowd and that also had a tie in with Japan. So when I was talking to the lovely Sam from Symantha Rose jewellery about my conundrum and she offered up two amazing pieces from her own personal wardrobe for me to borrow I couldn't say no. Especially when one of them was by Berlin label Starstyling the designers of which I met last year in Tokyo at my friends shop Wut Berlin which I blogged all about here. Too perfect!

This necklace means so much to me and I just had to wear it to this event. Brandon from Lactose Intoler-Art and I have been friends for a very long time, drawn together by our love of Japanese fashion and street style back on MySpace of all places. I've been a long time supporter of his work and seeing him follow his dreams, currently living in Tokyo and creating pieces that are being worn by both of our street style star idols is incredible. His illustrations have now walked the catwalk at Seoul fashion week in a collaboration with Singapore based label Revasseur and he just recently launched his own collection of street style inspired sports wear which was featured on TokyoFashion.com. I love you Brandon!

Brisbane sure put on a show for the opening night of Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion at #QAGOMA. The super kawaii Harajuku style girls were back looking as cute as they did during the morning media preview getting swamped for instagram selfies by attendees.

DJ Alex Murray-Leslie from Chicks on Speed played the best most perfect tunes for the night.

Attendees dressed the part, wearing as many avant-garde as possible.

I loved this ladies Soot bag. Soot is a local Brisbane label by Edwina Sinclair, a recent fashion graduate from QUT who was selected to showcase her graduate collection at #VAMFF's Graduate Showcase, which is where I first saw her work. Her pieces are stocked at Monk House Design in Melbourne as well as in the #QAGOMA store itself in Brissy. Definitely a designer to watch and I was lucky enough to visit her design studio while in town, more about that in my next blog post!

Oh my! AWalter Van Beirendonck necklace!

This dapper chap was wearing head to toe Comme des Garçons!

Leigh Buchanan from Project Runway Australia season one!

Fabulous fashion!

Soot designer Edwina Sinclair looking amazing in a red polkadot Comme des Garçons dress with her mum in matching spots wearing a dress by Melbourne label Alpha60.

I was maybe a little drunk by this stage but if I remember correctly this lovely lady told me she had made her dress at the very last minute. One of the best dressed of the night for sure!

It was great to see Melbourne pals Frances and Paul at the opening. They're long time supporters of my blog, even bringing me back presents from their travels to Tokyo. They're both wearing awesome Comme des Garçons pieces and looking fabulous.

Thea Basiliou owner of uber cool Brisbane boutique Blonde Venus playing it up with DJ Alex Murray-Leslie from Chicks on Speed. Both look incredible.

This fabulous dress was a DIY creation.

This is what I wore to the opening night celebrations. Like I said in my previous post I was really struggling with finding the perfect outfit for the opening. From the moment I got the invitation I started searching for something avant-garde enough to really stand out come opening night. Ideally I wanted to wear a Japanese designer but finding something both Japanese and in my size was proving difficult. That's why when Sam from Symantha Rose jewellery offered to lend me a piece from her own wardrobe by Japanese designer Balmung I jumped at the chance, especially as the Hachi the designer for the brand is an old friend of mine from my Tokyo days. Sam had no idea that I was friends with the designer so it was all just so perfect and meant to be. The oversized metallic Balmung top reminds me of the 'flatness' section of the exhibition and continues on from that particularly Japanese concept of deconstructed shapes that conceal rather than flatter the body that were initially explored by Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto in the 1980's that also feature heavily throughout the exhibition. Wearing something by one of the new generation of designers who are expanding upon those original ideas and who happens to be a friend of yours to an opening of an exhibition celebrating the history of Japanese fashion felt very surreal that's for sure.

Since buying this House of Holland dress on sale on ASOS a little while ago I've been practically living in it. It's just the most comfortable soft jersey fabric you can imagine which perfectly skims over my lumpy bits rather than clinging to them which is perfect for the hot weather we've been having (well occasional hot weather - this is Melbourne we're talking about here!) What drew me to the dress however was not the soft fabric, as with shopping online I of course had no idea it was just this soft, rather it was the amazingly bold pink cloud print that I instantly fell in love with. My never ending obsession with the colour pink and wearing it head to toe just never dies. So this is yet another #pinkcore all pink outfit that has fast become a favourite in my wardrobe.

My love for the label Gorman is very well documented on my blog so it will probably come as no surprise to you all that I have bought yet another Gorman dress, and how could I not? I  mean this amazing lobster print dress with it's faint pink polka dot fabric is just about the cutest dress to ever exist, well, EVER! I just love it so much. I love it even more now as I was actually wearing it when Lisa Gorman herself recognised me in the street the other night (of course I got a selfie with her which you can check out on my instagram). What an awesome pinch myself moment that was!

Henry and I headed down to Brighton Beach after work the other night with a little picnic to watch the sunset and to take some bikini photos for the City Chic blog. The backdrop was actually perfect for what I was wearing too. I mean hello matching orange and red bathing box, how cute are you?

AND this super happy crab was just too perfect to not pose next to. A perfect meeting of the crustaceans with my super cute lobster print dress and Mr Happy Crab on the bathing box. I do love these Brighton Beach bathing boxes ever so much, such a fun place to sit and watch the sunset on a hot summers day.

I need to stop using this bag so much, it's in all my recent blog posts pretty much. I just can't quit it though, it's so useful and fun and quirky which are all good qualities.

Getting away from Melbourne for a few days last week to the beautiful Sunshine Coast was a much needed break and I'm already missing the lazy days by the pool. I have had a lot of changes to my life recently, namely Henry and I have mutually decided to end our relationship, or as Gwyneth would say we have decided to consciously uncouple. We are both happy and at peace with our decision and looking forward to what the future brings. He will always have a special place in my heart and I am hopeful that we will continue as friends. The Sunshine Coast was the perfect place to regroup and focus on myself in the wake of this situation and I'm really glad I got to enjoy some much needed fun in the sun with friends. Of course I went all out with the #pinkcore poolside pieces as my love of pink just never ends!

I just love this pink floral bikini by independent Australian swimwear label Azalea Swim. I'm all about the #fatkini this year and this one is just so cute. I love love love the cute little frills. Azalea Swim cater up to a size 18 which is perfect for inbetweenies like me.

Not having Henry as my usual outfit photographer is going to take some getting used to. I really wanted to showcase just how bloody awesome these Doodad and Fandango ice cream earrings really are, hopefully you can tell. I've been wearing them everywhere since I got then. I want so many things from their collection, would make the best Christmas pressies!

Ok I'm kinda against shopping at H&M but I do pop in to have a look from time to time, usually on my way to the Strand Arcade's boutiques such as Gorman's Weekend store, Fat or Funkis. Anyway I was doing just that when I chanced upon this cute pink basket bag and I just had to have it even if H&M are highly questionable ethically and I prefer to shop local whenever possible. I can't be perfect all the time guys! This was only $10 which is both good and bad, good for my pocket but bad knowing just how little the people making it would receive. I feel so much guilt but I figure I do more than my bit and one bad thing is allowed. Don't hate me.

Oh look here! This is me doing my bit, haha. These awesome cute thongs/sandals are by Honeybees Australia and $2 per every pair sold goes directly to bee research. Bees are currently endangered and with them they will take our flora, fauna and a third of our diet if they do die out. So saving the bees is a really important cause, why not get some cute poolside shoes at the same time?

Hello and welcome to my first post of 2015. I had planned on doing a round up of what 2014 meant to me but in all honesty I've needed this short break from the blog to clear my head after a pretty eventful and intense year. But now I'm back and pinkerthan ever thanks to the Westgate Park natural salt water lake that turns bright pink in summer. As pretty as it looks I don't recommend bringing a picnic to eat around it as we had planned because it smells like egg farts which isn't exactly appetising. Speaking of eggs how amazing is my pink bubble dress by Brisbane designer Soot with it's prehistoric egg like shapes dotted around? I bought it when I visited the designer Edwina Sinclair in her studio in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley when I was in town for the opening night of Future Beauty at GOMA and have been waiting for the perfect location to pop up to shoot it in. The pink lake was kinda the perfect place to shoot this very unusual piece don't you think? So amazing to have come across this little known part of Melbourne.

These pink coke cans were just made for me. I just wish Coke Zero had these cute colours available too cos I don't actually drink full fat coke. I had a sip and it just tasted like icing sugar! FYI Coke didn't send me this or pay me or anything it's just a cute can and obviously their marketing team are great because here I am advertising coke for free just cos of a pink can #smartmarketers!

OMG this bag you guys, how amazing is it? Made by local Melbourne label Maude Studio I just love how much is sparkles. It reminds me of an old Barbie doll dress of mine from when I was a kid. The love heart shaped musk stick bangle is hand made in Melbourne by a man in his 80's called Alan. I love that it looks like one of my favourite childhood lollies - musk sticks. It's part of a set of three bangles stocked at Save Yourself Shop.

I actually shot this outfit late last year but lost the photos until today when I found my long lost sd card. I've worn this outfit a lot this summer and every time I do I end up getting lots of people stopping me to tell me they love it. I can see why, it's just so bold, bright and cheerful. I'm never one to play it safe so mixing these two prints and colours together comes naturally to me. My fashion motto is to wear whatever pleases me and this outfit pleases me greatly, I mean how could it not? It's just so fun to wear.

As some of you may know I just moved house. As such I need to downsize my wardrobe so I'm having a HUGE clear out at this Sunday's A Plus Market at the Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre from 10am - 3pm. I'll be selling pieces from lot's of plus size brands - ASOS, City Chic, 17 Sundays as well as a few larger pieces from H&M, Monki, Gorman, Obus and Sportsgirl. Of course there will also be vintage pieces I no longer wear and lot's of shoes, bags and accessories. Will be a good day with lot's of other stalls all selling plus sized clothing, hopefully see you there xoxo

Gorman A15 Moth and Moon

I was lucky enough to be invited to my all time favourite designer Gorman's A15 runway show for their Moth & Moon collection. The label was also celebrating 16 years, a huge achievement in the volatile world of fashion. Luckily Gorman are going from strength to strength with each new collection, always outdoing themselves design wise. To say I was excited to get the invitation to this in the mail is an understatement as I'm pretty sure you're all aware of just how much I do love this label. Well they certainly did not disappoint, every little detail of the night was amazing which you'll see in a moment but of course the clothes themselves were the absolute highlight as you can see above, photo by Lucas Dawson Photography.

The stunning location for the evening was the Conservatory in the Fitzroy Gardens which made the perfect backdrop for Gorman's trademark colourful collection.

Each invited guest received an exclusive fern print cushion, specially made for the event and embroidered on the reverse side with 'Gorman, Fitzroy Gardens a'15' as well as a delicious smelling candle and the beautifully shot Autumn look book which was photographed in Japan.

I told you every detail was perfect.

I couldn't resist taking some outfit photos pre-show in the space. I've actually shot an outfit here before but every time you visit the conservatory there are new flowers, arrangements and colours to discover.

I decided to not wear a full head to toe Gorman outfit as I guessed that's what most people would be doing (and I was right) so I went with my new Karen Walker bloom sweater dress. I was just wondering through Myer when I spotted it and I knew it had to be mine, that pale blue and white print is just to die for. Of course I still wanted to have some Gorman in my outfit so I wore my favourite Gorman wood block platform heels that I bought when they were first released but are heavily discounted now so get on that guys as they're the best shoes to wear and look so cute, honestly! The rest of my look comprised of my fave Lady Petrova floral crown, my Ne-Net polar bear/bunny rabbit bag and my trusty Tsumori Chisato sunglasses. Oh and my DIY white pom pom earrings I made using bits and pieces I bought at a Japanese jewellery supplies shop.

Where I was seated was really difficult for getting any front facing photos of the models because of shadows so all further runway photos are by Lucas Dawson Photography.

This gold jumpsuit was a real crowd pleaser but is unfortunately a runway only piece and not going into production. Talking to Lisa Gorman after the show she said everyone had mentioned it to her and of course everyone wants the runway only piece but her and Emily Ward the runway stylist had created the piece that day using other pieces and fabric from the collection earlier that day. Hopefully it does get made, if not for this season perhaps the next because I can totally see my bff Lauren rocking this.

Gorman's knits are the best and this is no exception.

Hello pink coat you were made for me.

I'm going to try both these pieces on as soon as they land in store. The gold foil pleated skirt is just a stand out piece I think I need in my wardrobe.

This seasons fern print as seen on the cushions earlier.

Gorman are known for their prints and I must say this is one of their best ever designs. Another item for the growing wish list.

The title Moth & Moon print is another standout print by Gorman. Those over the knee socks better be going into production because I need them!

I saw this baby pink cropped leather jacket in store the other day and didn't have time to try it on but you can be sure that I will be trying it on as soon as possible and hopefully purchasing it too - it's so perfect for me. I just love this whole look.

Yep guess what, I love this too. That puffa jacket and bag please be mine.

That circle bag - oh my! The dress - be still my beating heart.

What a fabulous collection. You can see the full album of runway photos on the Gorman facebook page. Thank you to Gorman and the team for having me, it was a wonderful night full of beautiful clothes and scenery, one that I will never forget.

As most of you would know I recently moved house and nothing makes me feel more at home than a bunch of fresh flowers. This bunch of Australian natives caught my eye at my local florist as I love the colours and textures of the Banksia and Warratah flowers against the greens of the native leaves and grasses. Not only do Banksias and Waratahs look stunning they also last a really long time as as they dry out they retain their colour and shape. I actually had my last bunch for over six months so it's a good investment too, especially at only $10 a bunch in my new neighbourhood compared to the $18 of my old area.

I've been a big fan of Breton stripes forever, I mean who doesn't love this classic wardrobe staple? For a long time plus size women have been told that horizontal stripes are a big no-no which I believe is just not true! Wear whatever you want and feel confident and happy in. Personally I think horizontal stripes emphasise my curves in all the right places and as soon as I saw this Gorman dress I knew it would look amazing on me, and it does (well at least I think so). Paired back with simple black accessories this look is a more casual everyday look for me, just a simple day of running errands, picking up groceries at the local market and meeting a friend for brunch.

This classic look called for more simple and understated sunglasses than you're used to from me. I'm not always about the loud and crazy but everything I wear does have to have a certain 'design edge' to it. What I love about these Le Specs sunnies from Universal Store is their clear pinky bronze toned frame and gold arms which I felt perfectly matched my gold Poms bangle. I'm really loving all things gold right now so finding these sunglasses was a dream.

Going with the French chic vibes of this outfit I also picked up some Macarons from By Josephine, my new local French Patisserie. Their macarons won best macarons of Melbourne in 2010 and I can definitely see why, well taste why - so delicious! Yes I'm already loving living North side, so many new wonderful places to visit and try.

I adore Marimekko and am so happy that they finally have stores in Australia! I've had a special plate for my home with the Unikko flower print for over 10 years now and still love it as much as the day I bought it. The Unikko flower print is Marimekko's most famous design and in 2014 the print celebrated it's 50th Anniversary. As part of the celebrations they released a clothing collection featuring the now iconic print and this jumper dress is one of the stand out pieces from that collection. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to buy it. Not only was it such a good cut for my figure but I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to wear my favourite flower print.

So happy being me #DUFFlife

Pink Romance

For their Autumn/Winter 'Bush Magic' collection Romance Was Born were inspired by the iconic illustrations and stories by May Gibbs of her Gumnut Babies. A national treasure, the stories of these cherubic Gumnut Babies are part of growing up in Australia with her books being best sellers for generations. I especially loved the stories of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, and would collect gumnuts from my grandma's huge Eucalyptus tree in her back garden imagining all the mischief the babies that lived inside them would get up to. So of course I just had to buy this amazing dress featuring some of these adorable Gumnut Babies, the fact that it was pink of course sealed the deal. I teamed the dress with my new Gorman baby pink leather jacket that I have had my eye on ever since their runway show. Such an amazing piece just made for me. The rest of the look went down the pink path, and why not? I do love it ever so much!

On the weekend I went to Lady Petrova's School of Fabulousness Create a Flower Crown class, where as the name of the class suggests we learnt how to make a flower crown! Now I've made my own flower crowns in the past but Lady Petrova's flower crowns are known for their fullness and amazing flower combinations so I was eager to learn from the best.

I set to work making my crown - going with my trademark pink with a blue headband to match my outfit.

Looking in the mirror to see if my flower crown needed any adjustments.

Very happy with the final results.

Delicious tea and mini cupcakes were served after the class.

Everyone in their stunning floral creations. The class is held in this amazing rooftop venue with full city view. It was such a beautiful sunny autumn day, although the sun was a little too bright for our eyes for this photo.

With the queen of all things flower crown - Lady Petrova.

I wore what has fast become one of my favourite outfits. I bought the fabulous dress the night of the Miranda Skoczek collaboration with Gorman launch, which was a really fun event made even more fun by the amazing collection which I just love. Every piece is adorable and I now own another dress from the collab so be sure to check back in for my blog post featuring that.

My finished flower crown in all it's glory - so happy with how it turned out.

I wore my new favourite necklace from Michael Hill jewellery, which means a lot to me. If you've been following my blog and social media over these last few months you would know that my husband and I had a little rough patch where we had a break for a few months (which after eight years of marriage is kind of understandable). Anyway I'm happy to say we have consciously recoupled and are more in love than ever. Last week we celebrated our eighth wedding anniversary and for my gift Henry gave me this beautiful key necklace as I'll always have the key to his heart, which was just so lovely and romantic. Oh and notice my name tag there, Lady Petrova somehow made mine to perfectly match what I wore, how lucky!

Whilst it was rather sunny it was still really cold in Melbourne so I had to wear tights or freeze to death. I found these old We Love Colors tights bundled up in a drawer, unopened and never worn, and immediately knew they would perfectly match this new dress with my cute pastel pink jelly heels, and I'm all about the matchy matchy as you know.

Everybody's favourite coffee scrub Frank Body has branched out and launched an amazing coffee infused skincare line for your FACE! Their dirty little secret was revealed at a fun filled pink themed party the other week - think pink walls, pink balloons, pink mini polaroids, pink dressing gowns and pink hoola hoops! Basically it was my kinda party - a pink party!

Social media-ing at the event, a little bit of upskirt action too haha.

Me with some of the models, I don't know what I was doing with my hand, but I do know I was having fun!

All the guests came away with the new range to test out for ourselves, how very lucky! I really love the packaging with the hints of pink and minimal design it's very chic!

As you can see I was very excited to test out the new Frank Body face range! A big positive with the Frank Body range is that it's not tested on animals, as the packaging says it's "only tested on babes" so that gets a big thumbs up from me! I've been using the products for just over two weeks now in order to give you my honest opinion on if and how they work.

First up was the Creamy Face Scrub- made with a blend of freshly roasted and ground Robusta Coffee to scrub away dry flakey skin, White Clay to help detoxify the skin helping to clean, nourish and soothe all skin types, Rosehip Oil which helps to regenerate skill cells and repair damaged skin tissue and Coconut, Grape Seed & Sweet Almond Oils which are rich in vitamins and minerals and are perfect for hydrating the skin. I have very sensitive skin and found this scrub didn't irritate my skin at all which I have often found with other face scrubs - it says in the flyer that it's rough and gentle all at once which is the best way to describe it as it leaves my skin feeling exfoliated yet moisturised at the same time, and after using it for about two weeks now my skin is feeling softer than ever before! And as much as it looks like poo when smeared all over my face this is definitely a repurchase item for me as it really seems to work wonders on my skin!

Next up is the Creamy Face Cleanser.  With Green Coffee Extract which has a high caffeine content that stimulates blood flow targeting psoriasis, eczema and acne, Marshmallow Root & Echinacea Extract which help to reduce puffiness and skin inflammation, Charcoal which you may be familiar with in Asian face masks targeting all your impurities, well the same applies here as the charcoal helps to draw out bacteria, dirt, chemicals and left over makeup (and it really does the job well) as well as the moisturising Coconut, Grape Seed & Sweet Almond Oils that importantly don't clog your pores! This cleanser has fast become my go to of a morning to cleanse away any left over makeup my usual Bioderma missed the night before, and a few times per week I like to use it with my Clarisonic for a really deep clean. I really feel that the charcoal element is what sets this cleanser apart and makes it work as well as I believe it does. Another repurchase item for me!

Lastly is the Everyday Face Moisturiser. This again has Green Coffee Extract, this time the caffeine and high levels of amino acids rejuvenate the skin, improving firmness and texture while reducig redness, Cocoa & Shea Butters are deeply hydrating which is obviously important in a moisturiser, Vitamin E a powerful antioxidant that targets dryness, acne and fine lines and Coconut, Grape Seed & Sweet Almond Oils which help to tighten and tone skin and are great at targeting breakouts.  Personally with a daily face moisturiser I prefer to use a combined sunscreen and moisturiser all in one as I do live in Australia after all and sun damage is a daily battle here. Sadly the Frank Body moisturiser doesn't contain any SPF but I do love that it is an all natural product not tested on animals. I would recommend it for someone who was after an all natural daily moisturiser that does work at reducing those fine lines and it really does leave my skin feeling smoother than a babies bottom. If it did have sunscreen I would love this product but as it stands I'll only use it at night as a night cream.

Thanks Frank Body for letting me get dirty with your new face range. I had a blast at the party and loved trying out the products for you all xoxo

Daylesford Birthday

I had the most incredible weekend away for my birthday this year. Henry and I took the v-line train to Daylesford, a stunning country town about two hours from the city of Melbourne known as the spa capital of Australia. As we don't drive we didn't get to visit the nearby Hepburn Springs as well, but in our short two day visit we sure packed a lot in. Walking around the town is pretty easy, although all the tourism does seem to be set up for those that drive as we were often advised something was just a quick 5 minute drive away and then when walking there were no footpaths, or footpaths that suddenly take you up people's driveways and to their house. We did eventually make it to all our destinations though, the beautiful Lake Daylesford, the old Convent Gallery and tea house and the epic vintage store that is the Mills Markets as well as taking advantage of the previously mentioned Spa's with a relaxing massage and facial for me, a wonderful birthday treat. All of our adventures were documented over on my instagram. On day one we walked up to the Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens, to take in the scenery and snap these outfit photos. My dress is a bit wrinkled from spending over two hours sitting on the train, but oh well I still looked cute!

It was absolutely freezing cold! Luckily I was prepared for this and had brought with my my cute pink ear muffs, beanie and gloves all from Daiso!

I just love my super cute Daiso gloves, you can't beat them for $2.80!

The Miranda Skoczek x Gorman collaboration is so amazing. This dress is the Team Miranda dress, I love everything about it from the name to the cute applique motifs to the cut. The perfect winter dress for me, I am living for jumper dresses these days.

The last time I went to Daylesford was on a school trip many many years ago. All I remember from that trip of our shot stop in the town was there was a lolly shop that sold giant chocolate freckles and I knew I wanted to see if they still did. So we found the shop, on the main street of the town and found what I thought were the giant freckles but were in fact just medium sized ones as right up the back was this giant thing. Of course we had to buy it even though Henry grumbled over the $20 price tag, but hey it was my birthday! It was actually pretty delicious, and a lot of fun too!

Colour Pop Winter Layering

I don't believe in basics, well not in the way that nearly every magazine or fashion blog preaches their importance to your wardrobe - "The 10 must have winter basics you need have in your wardrobe now" with a list of mostly black, white and denim pieces that are all incredibly boring to my eye. For me my winter wardrobe basics are of the loud and bold variety, sure I need a raincoat but make mine yellow with bright flowers all over it. Pink tights replace black tights, a cute pink beanie instead of a grey one, pink patterned gloves and so on, you get the picture - give me all the colour please! As Buzzfeed said recently of my style it's "retro meets rainbow, and shows that bright colours shouldn't be confined to the warmer months"!!! These photos were taken on a cold and rainy day whilst we were away in Daylesford, at beautiful Lake Daylesford. Did I mention it was absolutely freezing cold and lightly raining when we decided to walk around the lake? Thankfully I had my trusty and oh so bright Tsumori Chisato raincoat to layer over my outfit to keep the rain at bay, which had all the Daylesford locals and tourists starring at me as I was the brightest person in the whole town that day.

Underneath the raincoat I was wearing my trusty pink Gorman leather jacket which kept me toasty warm. A biker jacket is a must have piece for winter in my opinion, and I love owning one in statement making pink!

My outfit was this Shakuhachi two piece co-ord tie dye neoprene jumper and mini skirt that I picked up at their store in the Emporium on sale. Neoprene get's a bad rep from a lot of people who don't like the texture, personally I find it really warm and comfy and I love how bright this set is.

Down the Rabbit Hole

Remember late last year when I was flown to Brisbane for the opening of that amazing Japanese Fashion exhibition at QAGOMA? Well the above dress is what I had dreamed of wearing to the opening, by local Melbourne label Alpha 60 it has that modern Japanese sensibility to it and I wanted to represent some local Melbourne design at the event. However at the time this dress did not fit me at all, so I had to make other outfit plans - but I never forgot the dress. Since then I've been on a bit of a journey, both of the emotional and physical kind, and part of that journey was signing up for a weight loss trial with a local university and I've lost 20kgs so far. Previously I had never in my life actively tried to lose weight, I was happy as I was, and even now I am completely comfortable with being whatever size I may be, big or small I am still 100% body positive. I did this for me and I am proud that I have lost the weight but I do know that me doing this won't make everyone happy in the fatosphere and there could be a backlash which is why I've not really addressed it before today, even though people have noticed in the comments. At this point I'm still fat, I still happily identify as fat, and I'm not currently trying to lose any more weight. Right now, even more so than before, I sit in that awkward "inbetweenie" size range where I can fit into certain pieces in straight sized stores and still fit into plus size clothing too. As you all know I've always shopped and worn both plus size and straight sized clothes but now I just have more options in the straight sized clothing world, and this dress is one of them. It was such a freaking surprise that this fit me, I saw it sitting in the Alpha 60 outlet store in Fitzroy and remembered how much I had wanted it to fit just a few months ago for that opening night in Brisbane, so I decided to try it on. I honestly could not believe it got on, surely I hadn't lost that much weight? I don't really see it when I look in the mirror, I only notice it when I go to wear an old favourite skirt and it won't stay up, or in this instance something I really wanted but couldn't get over my head in the past in size L would now fit me in the size M. FYI sizing is weird and arbitrary, every store is different and if there's one thing I've learnt over the years it is it pays to always try things on. I'm still plus size, but I fit more into the size 14-16 bracket now, I still can't go into most stores and have something fit, but when I can it honestly is mind blowing. I can't imagine what it's like to have that be every single shop in every single street, that is a heck of a lot of choice, I'm not sure I or my wallet could handle it, especially considering my old rule of if it fits I buy it because finding something that fit was so rare. Experiencing some elements of thin privilege for the first time is certainly an eye opener and for now I'm happy to stay in this happy middle ground, but who knows what the future may bring? I may not be able to maintain the weight loss, which I know from extensive reading and the doctors I've been seeing is extremely common as your body is naturally fighting to go back to its set point weight. The weight loss industry feeds off this, and blames the dieters for going back to their old habits creating a never ending cycle of profit off the backs of people who then get depressed and blame themselves. I'm glad I've still never paid a single cent to the diet industry, not that there's anything wrong with you if you have. Eeeep this is meant to be about a dress and not an essay on my feelings about the evilness of the diet industry. This dress is what dreams are made of, white spotty silk goodness, I'm so happy that eventually we were able to be together.

I found this amazing gold bunny ears mask whilst cutting through H&M one night as it was raining outside. It was just sitting there with a giant red $2 sticker, and as much as it pains me to buy anything at H&M because I deplore their unethical factory conditions, I also really loved this mask. I've spoken before on my relationship with cheap fast fashion and preferring to steer clear as much as possible, but I also indulge very occasionally when something really stands out and catches my eye. Personally I believe I do the best I can and really it is up to the corporations to do better and not the individual entirely, yes I can and do mostly take my money elsewhere but sometimes I don't and that's okay too. Basically guys, this mask was cute, and hey, at least I'm talking about the issues of shopping at H&M and not glossing over it with pretty pictures like 99% of the blogosphere out there?

I am so in love with this bag! It's a Comme des Garçons x Cambridge Satchel Co collaboration piece that I found on a buy and sell facebook page. Such a fun bag to wear, and I love how I now have accidentally collected a bunch of gold accessories to pair with it, even down to my gold press on nails which were another cheapo $2 score this time from Kmart (who have signed the Oxfam accord, so potentially not as unethical as H&M but you can never be 100% sure).

I have always wanted a pair of Funkis clogs, and as I was walking through the city one night I noticed they were having a big sale at their Strand Arcade store in Melbourne. I got these for only $60, quite the score, and this time the bargain is an ethical one! I think I'm having a bit of a gold moment hey?

As you can see my pink obsession continues with this outfit. I tried this dress on over the weekend after seeing a girl wearing it at the Finders Keepers Market who looked drop dead gorgeous in it, I basically bee lined immediately to the closest Gorman to try it on. When I had previously seen it on the rack in stores I had assumed that it wouldn't suit my shape as I usually favour a-line styles. Well how wrong was I? As I stepped out of the change room to show Henry I was racking my brain on how to somehow make a quick $200 to buy it as I was currently -$11 in my bank account and well I NEEDED THE DRESS! As luck would have it I ended up being offered some much needed freelance work that night that allowed me to buy it before my size sold out as it is on sale. I love lucky moments like those, as I apparently grabbed one of the last size 14's in the state and that size is now sold out online. So lucky!

How awesome is the beautiful flower wall behind me? It was bitterly cold and raining on Sunday when Henry and I were in the city trying to work out what to do and where to shoot my outfit. Originally we had planned on going to the Botanical Gardens but were forced back on the tram just as we got there by the rain so we decided to check out some art at the nearby NGV. I picked up a flyer in the foyer and saw this epic wall of flowers, which turned out to be their new kids exhibition Open House: Tromarama for Kids so we headed straight there to see if we could shoot against the wall, and well the rest was history. So happy we stumbled upon it, it's so Kimye's wedding!

I love Maude Studio's unique collection of shiny metallic bags, and am so happy with this cute little bucket bag. It's perfect for events and always gets compliments.

I really wanted a pink Fuji Instax for my birthday this year but Henry refused to buy me a "toy" - even though he asked for and I bought him a remote control helicopter for his. Luckily my brother came to the rescue and bought me the camera as he understood how, no it's not just a toy it's a creative outlet, thanks bro!

I have been living in these shoes ever since I bought them. They go with all my outfits, pink is my neutral afterall!

Here I am chasing cherry blossoms somewhat unsuccessfully over the weekend. A friend told me that the Abbotsford Convent had a beautiful cherry blossom tree in bloom so I checked the geotag on instagram and saw that it was in full bloom three days previously and decided to hedge my bets and venture down to see it in it's full beauty for myself. Unfortunately it seems three days was enough time for it to start to wilt, but it still was a pretty sight to see. I wore my new ultimate dream outfit comprising of pretty pastel pieces layered under an amazing black sheer patchwork dress from Gorman's incredible latest SS15 collection.

I found this bag at Savers for only $3.99 and just had to have it for all it's amazing silly cuteness.

Pink dog bag Thrifted from Savers

Oh I dyed my hair pink using Fudge recently, it was meant to be a little more pastel but it will fade out and I kinda like this bright pink anyway. What do you think?

WOW look at that, I'm not wearing glasses! Yes I have finally got contact lenses. I've actually asked my optometrists over the years for contacts but was always told I probably couldn't wear them, but my new optometrist said I definitely could. There's actually no reason why I couldnt. I am so confused and angry about my previous optometrists saying I can't, was it purely and simply fat shaming - like there was no point in me wearing them as I was already fat and therefore ugly? I actually can't work it out. Sadly contacts wearing means I can't grow my nails long, at least not just yet as I still am getting used to putting them in. It took me over two hours on my first try to get them in but now it takes me under five minutes for both eyes and is getting easier and easier with each try. This means I can wear all my designer sunglasses now and not just stick to the few pairs that I had prescription lenses put into. Also hello fake eyelashes which I'm wearing above. I could never wear them previously as they would hit my glasses constantly. My makeup also needs to change slightly as it's a little too bold perhaps as I needed it to be stand out to be seen whilst wearing my specs. I'm still going to be wearing my glasses most days, contacts are just for special occasions or for days when I want to wear my sunnies. It's so weird to be able to clearly see my face when not wearing my glasses for the first time in years, which means I can clearly see what I'm doing when I'm doing my makeup too.

I can wear sunglasses and SEE! Thank you contact lenses!

Eeep so sorry about not blogging in a while, I was sick with gastro for what felt like forever then I got sick with the flu right after that so I'm a little behind on everything. Trying to catch up now with this quick outfit post I took on the weekend on my way to the Brunswick Flea Market. I wore my new favourite pot plant print dress from Lazy Oaf which I think is going to be perfect to wear on my upcoming trip to Vietnam, a fun update to the classic maxi dress with it's super adorable pink print! Of course I teamed it all with pink accessories and my slightly still pink hair. Pink hair just washes out way too fast, I think I'm too lazy for the upkeep so I'm going to be staying blonde for now. I do love how my pink hair looks though, just wish it lasted longer than 7 days at a time on me.

I'm really excited that in just under a month I will be travelling around Vietnam with my bff Lauren and husband Henry for three whole weeks! This is all of our first time visiting Vietnam or South East Asia for that matter so we're really looking forward to seeing the vast beauty of the country, experiencing the history and culture as well as eating all the yummy food (although Lauren is a vegan and I'm a vegetarian so not sure exactly how easy this will be for us, lucky ol' Henry can and will eat anything so he'll be fine haha!) We're travelling all over the country too - from Phu Quoc to Hanoi and in-between, staying in small beach side towns and big cities, saying I can't wait is an understatement and a half! I've been slowly collecting clothes that I think will travel well and be good in the humidity but still in my usual bright, fun and mostly pink style. This Gorman dress was a no brainier really, the perfect length for those windy days where anything shorter and your knickers are on show the whole day. The cute pink manicured hand print really sold me on it, as did the breathable cotton fabric which I like to live in come hot weather. All in all it is the perfect dress for the warmer weather and I can't wait to wear it in Vietnam #cantwait!!!

On my way home one day I popped into my local Dimmey's, which is a small chain of discount stores in Melbourne, and this pink t-shirt was just sitting there all on it's own with a $2.50 sticker on it. Of course I snapped it up as it was the exact shade of pink that I was after. Super lucky, it obviously was meant to be!
